Towkay Prawn Mee

Sin Ming prawn noodles

$5 portion of prawn noodles

This was another stall courtesy of my Mother, who learned of its existence through a newspaper article claiming to have compiled a list of the best prawn noodle stalls in Singapore, (we’ll see about that…) and saved it for my return from a week-long trip in Thailand which is the best kind of news to come home to.

According to the newspaper article, Tokway Prawn Mee claimed they strived to create “a gourmet bowl of prawn mee using the finest and freshest ingredients” which certainly sparked my interest. After some arguing and fumbling with Google Maps for directions, we finally arrived at their stall at Sin Ming Road.

Apparently we had arrived after the crowd, and they only had kway teow noodles left to serve which although was a change to my regular choice of yellow noodles, somewhat reminded me of a good Ipoh Kway Teow. The noodles had a good bite, and complemented the flavors of the soup very well. The soup itself was very tasty, primarily porky and naturally sweet. It wasn’t overly pungent and didn’t taste of MSG. Fantastic.

The prawns were very flavorful, which can be attributed to the fact that they are pan-fried beforehand. Just the right texture. The $8 and $10 portions include higher quality Angka prawns, however I mistook the higher price for simply being a larger portion, and didn’t get a chance to try the Angka prawns, which I definitely will at a future visit!

The noodles were served accompanied with kang kong and bean sprouts which added pleasing crunchy textures into every bite, but it is the pork ribs that are Tokway’s supposed specialty. Their pork ribs are flown in from Denmark and are claimed to be the best quality ribs available, which is a claim they undoubtedly live up to. The ribs are so tender that they effortlessly fall off the bone, and soft to the bite whilst not feeling “mushy” in the mouth. The pork was cooked exceptionally well, and definitely justified the $5.
